Staff Census Display

The Whitecapel Gallery currently has an exhibition of paintings of all their staff created by 16-19 year olds and have presented it as above. It would make a strong display for the South Wing Corridors and could involve all school staff as part of an on-going census where students photograph initially and then a competition is held for pupils to paint, draw or creatively interpret their portraits for display.

The BASE Word Display

The BASE team have been working hard to improve the image of the area in and around the entrance to the sixth form base. Although currently being renovated, they have a display of positive words creeping up the staircase and decorating the department.

Display Time Lines

In History, time lines are commonly used to break down historical references into more manageable chunks ad to be able to compare and contrast events. Your department might consider a time line that is simply subject-specific or something more thematic or cross-curricular.

Student Work Displayed

Displays in the corridor are the perfect place to exhibit outcomes produced by students, such as in the case of this ICT project, since they have access to viewing it at various points throughout the day. If such displays are put in the class, it is likely that they won't be able to spend as much time looking and talking about it.

Signage

Although perhaps limited in learning potential, displays can play the simple role of just providing signage and support navigating through the department.

Library Comic Workshop Display

Recently, comic artist Kev Sutherland came to Fortismere to work with year 10 students to produce a collaborative comic involving their drawings combined with his. Please go and take a look at the current display in the library.

Y10 Body Sculptures Exhibition

Congratulations to 10B/AR1 (now known as the 'Space Invaders' collective) for their current body exhibition, which involved creating an installation in North Wing based on the Body/Figure and responding to the space creatively.

The brief required them to work as a group and consider how and where their work should be positioned within the location. It worked very well presenting it as a challenge and giving a couple of specific roles such as that of the 'curator'. The group are generally highly motivated, so it was not a surprise that they were organised, although they worked very hard outside of the lessons to get them completed. Whilst away on paternity leave, I was told they were very independent - more so than when I was around apparently (thanks, Ms Powell)... so perhaps, there is a lesson for us as teachers to allow more autonomy and less interference until requested!

Please let them know what you think.

Randy's Hanging Sculpture

Randy Denham in Year 10 has caused a stir with his controversial sculpture which hangs suspended from north wing ceiling. It is part of his GCSE art project in response to the theme of the body. Departments might want to consider how they might create a debate through a subversive and controversial display.

Philips Lighting

Philips, the Dutch lightbulb manufacturing company, have recently started supporting schools with installing special lighting that helps support better concentration in class by changing the colour temperature of the lighting at different times of the day. Although it might be too expensive to install throughout the school, the idea of changing your lighting to improve levels of concentration is something that staff might like to experiment with. It is possible to purchase daylight colour strip lighting.

Mr Jenkins' Maths Display

Speaking with Paul in Maths, he is adamant that his classroom display should be about embedding key curriculum concept that will support their classwork. He prefers for his displays to be simple and legible to ensure that they don't distract the students from concentrating.

Zek, When you come in tomorrow can you group email the DFL toolkit link to all staff please? It looks great and should provide ideas. I mentioned this in briefing this morning. I think staff could really benefit from seeing all the work you and the team have been doing.

Display for Learning (DfL) Toolkit

The above slideshow is to support staff with understanding how they might use display to support a greater interest and knowledge and understanding in their subject area. Currently in progress.

Mr Price's Table Displays

Mr Price has been piloting a new display initiative that involves placing work and stimuli underneath perspex sheets (with the help of Bobby Bower) onto some of his classroom tables. An innovative example of display for learning!
