Review of Teachers' Standards
The independent Review of Teachers’ Standards, chaired by Sally Coates, on Monday 12 December published its final report and recommendations. The Secretary of State also communicated his initial response to the recommendations.
The Review is recommending that the current Post-Threshold, Excellent Teacher and Advanced Skills Teacher standards should be discontinued as standards. A further recommendation is that a new high-level standard should be established to set an aspirational statement of what it means to be an excellent practitioner. The Review is proposing that this should be named the Master Teacher Standard.
The Secretary of State has responded to Mrs Coates by welcoming the Review’s recommendations and accepting the principle and wording of the proposed Master Teacher Standard. He has also acknowledged that detailed consideration will need to be given to the implications of discontinuing the current standards, as well as any arrangements for implementing the proposed Master Teacher Standard. The Review was not remitted to make any recommendations relating to teachers’ pay, and the Secretary of State has confirmed that he intends to ask the School Teachers’ Review Body to consider the possible implications of the Review’s proposals.
The Review’s first and final reports, and copies of correspondence between the Secretary of State and Sally Coates and questions and answers can be found on the Review's section of the Department for Education website: http://www.education.gov.uk/schools/teachingandlearning/reviewofstandards

Until decisions about the final report of the Review of Teachers’ Standards have been taken by ministers, procedures for teachers to be assessed against the AST and ET standards are still in place (as set out in the School Teachers Pay and Conditions Document).
